Historic Preservation Program (Source http://arch.rwu.edu/)
The mission of the Historic Preservation program is to provide
students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary
to successfully meet the professional challenges involved in
preserving our physical and cultural heritage. This is accomplished
through a structured program that enables students to acquire
a strong background in history, architectural styles, historic
building documentation, architectural conservation, and preservation
philosophy, research, planning, law and finance.
With its first four-year degree granted in 1976, the RWU Historic
Preservation program is one of the oldest in the country and
the only undergraduate degree program of its kind that is offered
within the context of a school of architecture. Many historic
preservation students choose to pursue a minor in architecture,
art and architectural history, visual arts studies, or another
other area. Completion of a double major to be chosen from a
large number of liberal arts fields is also possible.
The cultural heritage of southern New England, the Narragansett
Bay region, and easy access to Boston, New York, and Providence,
not to mention the historic town of Bristol itself, are additional
assets and provide support for the program. Students complete
some of their courses at the advanced level in Providence, and
are able to participate in RWU's Study Abroad Program in Florence
during the junior or senior year at the Institute for Fine and
Liberal Arts at the Palazzo Rucellai.
With its study program recognized by the National Council for
Preservation Education at undergraduate level, and preparing
to expand its curricular activities further into graduate study
in a near future, the RWU Historic Preservation program is and
will remain a significant and integral part of the SAAHP's mission:
to create and to conserve.
