Syllabus Materials Outline to be Prepared by Faculty for Each Course Taught (RWU SAAHP)

Updated each semester if repeated course. Although the first several items should appear at the top/beginning of all syllabi, faculty may individualize the format of their syllabi as long as all relevant elements are included.

A. Syllabus

  1. Course Code and Title
  2. Course type (lecture, studio, lab) and credit hours
  3. Semester/Year
  4. Meeting time, place
  5. Instructor’s name, office room #, office telephone #, email (optional)
  6. Instructor’s office hours, (at least 4 hours/week)
  7. Course description
  8. Prerequisites for course
  9. Goals/Objectives of course
  10. Projects and/or assignments (appropriate for most studio courses)
  11. Requirements of course: Papers, exams, attendance, discussion participation,
    reviews, etc.
  12. Evaluation criteria/grading method

B. Schedule of Class Meetings

Sequential list of class meetings with topic, activity, readings, and description of material to be covered for each class.

C. Bibliography

Required and recommended readings in standard bibliographic format. Some studio courses may have no required texts and few other readings – or perhaps readings only in the form of handouts.

D. Materials/supplies list

Copies of all handouts, including sample exams if they are used, should be attached to the above for the central file of the School and to be used for accreditation purposes.
