States (SHPOs and Statewide Nonprofits)

The purpose of this assignment is to find good examples of how:

  1. State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO) are conducting their NHPA-mandated work and non-mandated (elective) initiatives.
  2. Statewide Nonprofits are addressign state needs with specific initiatives.

Choose two (2) of your adopted states.

Preview the Initiatives list and consider the scope of initiatives defining preservation. This list is intended to provide you with the vast range of initiatives, only a few of which any particular state may be addressing.

State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO)

State historic preservation offices (SHPO) can be located at National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers NCSHPO site.

To address the mandated SHPO work, use the NHPA Section 101 language:

  1. Chart how each state is meeting its mandates, based on the programs, services, resources and information their Web site provides..
  2. Select at least two "best practice" examples (total, not in each state) of how the SHPO meets their mandates.
  3. In a Word document, list each initiative, the Web address (URL), and an annotated description of why you think the selected program is exemplary.
  4. Print out relevant information from the Web.

To address the "elective" SHPO work, use a checklist to:

  1. Chart how each state is developing elective ("non-mandated") programs and initiatives, in response to cultural resources and preservation issues and needs. Use the SHPO web sites to assess the programs, services, resources and information.
  2. Select at least three "best practice" examples (total, not in each state) of how the SHPO has developed exemplary electives.
  3. Print out any relevant information.

Statewide Nonprofits

Locate your states at the National Trust for Historic Preservation State and Local Contacts. The "statewides" are usually identifies as the "National Trust Statewide Partner". If you can not find your statewide on the NTHP site, try State Profiles, ePreservation. Work that nonprofits ( not-for-profit organizations) do varies; it is based on their act of incorporation, by-laws adn mission.

  1. See how each statewide nonprofit is developing initiatives, based on the programs, services, resources and information their Web site provides.
  2. Select at least four "best practice" examples (total, not in each state) of how the Statewide Nonprofit has developed exemplary electives.
  3. In a Word document, list each initiative, the Web address (URL), and an annotated description of why you think the selected program is exemplary.
  4. Print out relevant information from the Web.

Be ready to discuss your findings in class. Hand in a hard copy of your selections and printouts.
