Châteauesque 1880-1910

  • Asymmetrical plans and elevations
  • High steep-sided hipped roofs rising to a ridge or flat roof surmounted by metal railings or cresting
  • Round turrets, or tourelles, are corbeled out from walls at the second story and capped by "candle-snuffer" roofs
  • Wall dormers with high, pinnacled gables, stone tracery, steep pediments
  • Windows with lintel or arched ("basket-handle"), openings crossed with masonry mullions and transoms, croisettes
  • Doors with "basket-handle" arch or semicircular with flanking pilasters
  • Masonry: varying from coursed smooth-faced ashlar to rock-pitched and carved
