Modernistic (Moderne) 1920 to 1940

  • Art Moderne: asymmetrical facade; smooth wall surfaces, usually of stucco; flat roof with coping at roofline; grooves or lines in wall; balustrade all with a horizontal emphasis
  • Art Deco: smooth wall surfaces, usually of stucco of mass-produced material; zig-zags, chevrons, and other stylized geometric motifs occur as decorative elements, but secondary to overall rectilinear form; towers and other vertical projections above the roofline give a vertical emphasis (setback); polychrome effects in shiny materials
